Ghanaian defender Alexander Djiku is excited about the upcoming season under Fenerbahçe’s new manager, José Mourinho.
Djiku, who impressed in his debut season (3 goals, 2 assists in 36 games), spoke highly of Mourinho’s tactical knowledge and the team’s commitment to adapting to his philosophy.
“Our training is going well,”Alexander Djiku told Fenerbahçe TV. “We’re working hard to understand and implement our coach’s game tactics and philosophy. He’s a truly great coach and tactician. Having the chance to learn from his experience makes us very happy.”
Mourinho’s arrival marks his first foray into Turkish football, adding another chapter to his already remarkable career managing clubs in Portugal, England, Italy, and Spain. Fenerbahçe narrowly missed out on the league title last season, finishing just three points behind rivals Galatasaray, which ultimately led to the departure of previous manager Ismail Kartal.
Djiku’s praise reflects the positive atmosphere surrounding Mourinho’s appointment. The “Special One” boasts a trophy-laden career, solidifying his status as a “football legend” in Djiku’s eyes. Fenerbahçe fans are undoubtedly hopeful that Mourinho’s tactical prowess will translate into on-field success.
Before their domestic title challenge begins, Fenerbahçe has a crucial hurdle to overcome in the UEFA Champions League second round qualifiers. They face Swiss side FC Lugano in a two-legged encounter on July 23rd and 30th, respectively. A successful qualification will see them progress towards the group stage.
Fenerbahçe’s quest for the Süper Lig title kicks off in August. The season opener is scheduled for August 11, where they will face Adana Demirspor. With a strong returning core, a new tactical approach being implemented under Mourinho, and a Champions League challenge looming, Fenerbahçe fans have plenty to be excited about this season.
