Algeria suffer first defeat since 2018 as Equatorial Guinea stun defending champions in Group E

Following a 0-0 draw with Sierra Leone in their first game of the tournament, Algeria were unable to make things right as they were stunned by Equatorial Guinea on Sunday evening.

The defending champions were aware that anything less than a draw would put their qualification chances in jeopardy but there was nothing they could do about it.

Equatorial Guinea who were defeated in game 1 put up a resilient performance to run out winners with a 1-0 score line.

Esteban Obiang scored in the 70th minute to help his side pull off the biggest surprise of the tournament and in the process end Algeria’s run of 35 unbeaten internationals which dates back to October of 2018.

The shock Group E result means that Algeria are now bottom of the standings and need a win in their last group game against the Ivory Coast on Thursday to stand any chance of advancing.

Equatorial Guinea now have three points, one behind the Ivorians on four, with Sierra Leone on two and Algeria with one.
