Ghana coach Otto Addo has justified his decision to leave out veteran player Andre Ayew from the recent Black Stars squad that competed in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR).
Despite Ayew’s fine form, he was omitted as Ghana secured crucial victories over Mali and CAR, rejuvenating their World Cup qualification hopes after an initial win and defeat against Madagascar and Comoros.
Addo addressed concerns in an interview with 3Sports, praising Ayew’s contributions to Ghanaian football while emphasizing his responsibility to make decisions in the team’s best interest.
“I think it’s a normal question. He’s a player. I said it before. I mean, he’s a legend, a living legend,” Addo stated. “He has done so much for the nation. He sacrificed so much for the nation. Good guy, with good character. He represents Ghana these days like no one has. But, surely, as a coach, I have to think about what’s best for the Ghana national team.”
Addo further explained that his decision came after a private discussion with Ayew, underscoring the importance of keeping such conversations confidential.
Black Stars: Otto Addo opens up about possible return of Andre Ayew
“I had a good conversation with him, and I took my decision. It wouldn’t be fair to talk about the content in public. This is a private conversation, and I want to keep it between us. But like I said, I take my decision always for the best of the nation and the team.”
Black Stars revival without Andre Ayew
Ghana’s victories have revived their hopes of qualifying for their fifth World Cup, set to be held in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
The national team will resume action in September for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where Addo will again have to assess his squad and make decisions in the team’s best interest. Whether Ayew will be included in the future remains to be seen.
