Former Premier League manager and head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana, Avram Grant has stated that Asamoah Gyan could have achieved more in his playing career if he had stayed in the Premier League.
Asamoah Gyan is regarded by many as one of the best strikers on the African continent with his records at the FIFA World Cup but his former head coach believes he could have achieved more looking at the qualities he posses.
The 34 year old joined Sunderland from Rennes in 2010 and started stealing headlines in his debut season. He scored 11 goals in 33 appearances.
After a bright start to life in the Premier League on his debut season, he moved to Al Ain in the Gulf Region which Avram Grant thinks it is the biggest mistake he made in his career.
Speaking to 433ghana.com, the former Chelsea Football Club boss said Gyan has great qualities and Drogba even told him (Avram Grant) that Gyan should have achieved more.
“Asamoah Gyan is one of the biggest qualities I have ever seen in my life, because he has everything as a striker, he has the passion to score, he can score with his feet, his head, he is very good mentally, I’m sure you remember that 2015 AFCON game against Algeria, the goal he scored in the last minute.
“I think his biggest mistake was not staying in the Premier League which he could have stayed because I think if he had stayed, he would have been considered as one of the best strikers
“I spoke to Didier Drogba not long ago and he told me that Asamoah Gyan is one of his favorite and he could have achieved more. I think it was a mistake moving from the Premier but we all make mistakes when we are young but he should have stayed in the Premier League, there is not many strikers with his qualities” he told 433ghana.com in an interview.
Asamoah Gyan is Ghana’s current top scorer at international level with 51 goals.
