Former Black Stars striker, Augustine Arhinful, has joined the calls for major improvement in the quality of pitches at various stadia particularly those used by national football teams.
He said this in an interview with Citi Sports during the launch of the 2024 Ghana Football Awards with the event taking place mere days after Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team beat Central African Republic 4-3.
The win came in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi that had Black Stars head coach Otto Addo have a dig at the nature of the pitch and Black Stars captain Thomas Partey call on Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for a better playing surface at the venue.
Asked for his thoughts on the big issue, Augustine Arhinful stated that despite the challenges, Ghana’s two biggest venues should have a top playing pitch.
“I believe it’s a right call. At least we have Kumasi Sports Stadium Baba Yara-we have Accra Sports Stadium, if we are capable of changing the entire grass on these pitches…and then have proper maintenance people on the pitch, I think we will always be smiling.”
