Barcelona ‘want to sign Cancelo on loan as they look to strengthen at full-back’

The 28-year-old is currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Manchester City after falling out of favour with Pep Guardiola.

Bayern can make his move permanent at the end of the season by triggering a £62 minion buyout clause, but are not willing do so after the fullback has struggled to has made just six starts since arriving in Bavaria.

He could now be on the move again, as Sport reports that Barca boss Xavi is keen on bringing Cancelo to the Nou Camp on loan.

The Catalan giants are said to value the fullback’s ‘versatility’, and see him as their best option due to other options being too expensive.

Barca’s willingness to bring in a fullback may be partially inspired by their recent Clasico defeat in the Copa del Rey.

They were beaten 4-0 by Real Madrid in the second leg of their semi final, with natural centre back Ronald Araujo struggling after being deployed at right back.

For City, Bayern’s reluctance to hang on to Cancelo has given them a dilemma.

Sportsmail had exclusively revealed that the full back had a heated training ground bust-up with City boss Guardiola, which prompted him to seek an exit.

He has four years to run on his contract, but that City allowed him to leave for a European rival mid-season without defensive cover served as a major indicator over his role within the squad.

Publicly, Guardiola has not shut the door on Cancelo’s return at the end of his loan, but sending him back out to Barcelona could be a good option for all parties.

The fullback’s new side will face his old one next Tuesday, when Bayern face City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final.

Thomas Tuchel’s side come into the game with a perfect record in the competition this season, but have had something of a turbulent few weeks after switching managers and conceding ground in the title race by losing their last game to Freiburg.

City, meanwhile, will be desperate to win a first UCL trophy this season and may have the perfect weapon in Erling Haaland, who put five past RB Leipzig in their last European game.
