Chelsea complete signing of Charlton striker Mason Burstow

Chelsea have completed the signing of 18-year-old Charlton striker Mason Burstow, who will return to The Valley for the remainder of the season.

The Blues were quiet during the January transfer window, recalling Kenedy from his loan with Flamengo and signing young left-back Dylan Williams from Derby County, the latter of whom has gone straight into the academy.

Following the closure of the window, Chelsea confirmed that they struck a deal to sign Burstow, who has returned to Charlton for the rest of the campaign to try build on his return of six goals in 14 appearances for the League One side.

Charlton manager Johnnie Jackson said: “He is someone that we love here. I’m really fond of him and love his attitude, it has been great to see him develop. We’re enjoying helping him develop and giving him the opportunities he’s had so far.

“It is great the club has got a deal the chairman is happy with and that we are getting him back on loan.”

A number of sides were keen on Burstow and another Premier League side are understood to have tabled a bid, but it was Chelsea who won the race for his signature.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in Mason but we only were going to let him go if it was an excellent deal for the club,” said Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard. “Chelsea have matched our valuation and, as part of the deal, he will come back to us on loan which was important for us.”

Chelsea have been following Burstow for a while and had the young striker on trial back in 2020, but after declining to sign him at that point, they have paid up to bring him in now.
