Columbus Crew makes Jonathan Mensah their first ever African player to be named skipper

Senior national team known as the Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah was nominated as club captain after the departure of Will Trap who served as club captain for three years.

Frederick Higuan was the last Non- American to captain the side in 2013 before Johnathan Mensah who has now become the first African footballer to be made captain.

The 29-year-old defender has been with the club for four seasons now and has earned a reputation as a leader both on and off the pitch.

He celebrated his captaincy as his side beat visitors New York City 1–0.

With his new role as a skipper in his club team, fans of the national team will be hoping he emulates the qualities that earned him the armband in the national team.
