Germany delivered a scintillating performance in the opening match of Euro 2024, crushing Scotland 5-1 at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
The dominant display set an early benchmark for the tournament and left Scotland with much to ponder.
The tone was set early, with Florian Wirtz scoring just 10 minutes into the match. Wirtz’s clinical finish came as he skillfully guided the ball past Scotland’s goalkeeper, igniting the home crowd.
Jamal Musiala doubled Germany’s lead nine minutes later with a ferocious strike that left Angus Gunn, Scotland’s goalkeeper, with no chance. Musiala’s powerful shot was a dagger to the hearts of the Scottish supporters behind the goal.
Things went from bad to worse for Scotland just before halftime when Kai Havertz converted a penalty. The penalty was awarded after Ryan Porteous was shown a red card for a reckless challenge, leaving Scotland with only 10 men. Havertz’s composed finish from the spot put Germany firmly in control with a 3-0 lead.
Germany’s attacks
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Scotland fought bravely but could not stem the tide of Germany’s attacks. Substitute Niclas Fullkrug added a fourth goal for Germany, hammering the ball high into the net and putting the result beyond doubt.
Scotland managed to pull one back late in the game through an own goal by Antonio Rudiger. The goal was celebrated wildly by the Scottish fans, providing a brief moment of joy in an otherwise disappointing match.
However, Germany had the final word, with Emre Can scoring in injury time to complete the 5-1 rout. This emphatic victory marks the largest win in an opening game of the Euros, underscoring Germany’s formidable strength.
Euro 2024
The match was a clear statement of intent from Germany as they aim for Euro 2024 glory since last winning in 1996.
