EXCLUSIVE: CAF rubbishes reports of league ranking

The Confederation of African Football has rubbished reports that it has released the latest rankings of the best leagues in Africa.

There has been widespread report in the local media that the Ghana Premier league has sunk further down to 24th in the latest ranking.

With countries like Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Kenya all above Ghana.

However, the continent’s football governing body has clarified that the list only captures performance of each country in the inter-club competitions.

Therefore the current ranking is after the addition of points accumulated by teams that participated in the 2020/2021 Total CAF Champions League & Confederation Cup.

It can also be recalled that Hearts of Oak was Ghana’s sole representative in Africa last season.

Having won the domestic treble, the Rainbow club represented Ghana in the CAF Champions League. The Phobians were walloped 6-2 on aggregate by Wydad Athletic Club in the playoffs.

After dropping to the Confederations Cup, the Phobians took a 2-0 advantage over Algerian club JS Saoura at the Accra Sports Stadium but ultimately crashed out after a 4-0 defeat in the return leg.
