Former Black Queens goalkeeper Patricia Mantey appeals for funds for surgery
Former Black Queens goalkeeper Patricia Mantey is urgently appealing for financial assistance to undergo surgery for a severe ligament injury.
Mantey, who sustained the injury while playing for Immigration Ladies. Seeking help from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the general public.
The injury occurred in October 2021 during a friendly match at the McDan Astro Turf.
Recalling the incident, Mantey said, “It was a corner kick, so I jumped into the air and caught the ball. When I landed, I realized my leg had twisted.”
Following an MRI test, doctors diagnosed Mantey with torn ligament tissues, requiring surgery estimated to cost GHC 60,000.
Despite receiving her salary from Immigration Ladies, the funds are insufficient to cover the medical expenses. “Although Immigration still pays me, I appeal to the GFA, Ministry of Youth and Sports. The general public to support me with money to undergo ligament surgery,” Mantey stated.
Mantey’s illustrious career includes playing for the Black Queens from 2012 to 2018. She was part of the team that triumphed in the inaugural WAFU Zone B Women’s tournament in Abidjan, securing a 1-0 victory over host nation Cote d’Ivoire.
The 31-year-old goalkeeper also played a crucial role in the Black Maidens’ historic qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, following a 2-1 win over Cameroon in Yaounde.
As Patricia Mantey continues to recover from her injury, she remains hopeful that the support of the football community and the public will enable her to return to the field and continue her contribution to the sport.
