Former Chief’s midfielder Frank Makua pray to avoid relegation for his former club

The likes of Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Njabulo Blom have become regulars under Hunt in spite of their lack of experience, while seniors such as Willard Katsande and Kearyn Baccus has watched from the side-lines.

Though results have not been forthcoming for Chiefs, Makua has vouched for the talented youngsters to be retained in defeat rather than returning to the old guard.

“To be honest, the likes of Katsande had their chances. Gavin Hunt gave all of them a chance,”

“The way things are going, I don’t think they can help the team, it’s better he continues using these youngsters. How many games have we lost using the senior players?

“Yes, the youngsters still lack experience but now the tried and tested are the ones who are costing us most of the time. That’s how I see it.

“If you can check, even last season, we lost the league using which players? With the same experienced players. I think he sees they are letting him down, so he doesn’t care anymore.

“He is [showing that] it’s better I use the youngsters. Yes, we won’t see progress now, it’s still going to take time, but it’s better to lose using youngsters than with the experienced players.”

The 46-year-old further noted the dependence on Samir Nurkovic as a problem, while stating that Amakhosi supporters should just hope not to suffer relegation this season.

“Another thing I’ve noticed, is that we’ve been complaining about Nurkovic, Nurkovic… But a big team like Kaizer Chiefs can’t rely on one person,” he added.

“What are the other players doing? [Khama] Billiat, [Lebogang] Manyama – those are quality players but they can’t deliver.

“I don’t blame Gavin Hunt for using youngsters, they will gain experience as times goes on. But it’s still going to take time. This season we should just pray not to get relegated.”
