Former Accra Hearts of Oak star striker Prince Tagoe has called for a leadership overhaul at the club, citing ongoing struggles despite their historical success.
Tagoe, who played a key role in the club’s triumphs, including winning the CAF Confederation Cup and league titles, expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs at the Phobians.
While Hearts of Oak enjoyed a brief resurgence in 2021 under coach Samuel Boadu, claiming their first league title in over a decade, the club has struggled to maintain its dominance both in Ghana and Africa.
Tagoe believes the club’s lack of progress is tied to the leadership’s inability to adapt to modern football dynamics.
Speaking to GhanaWeb, Tagoe urged the club’s Executive Board Chairman, Togbe Afede XIV, to bring in fresh leadership with new ideas.
He particularly emphasized that those involved in decision-making should refrain from interfering with player selection and signings, leaving those responsibilities to the coach.
“If Togbe Afede wants to keep those people around, they shouldn’t come close to player selection and signing decisions.
They should leave everything to the manager. If not, all those people need to be sacked,” Tagoe said.
Tagoe stressed that football management must evolve, stating, “We’re not running football with a mindset from the ’60s battalions, you have to change it. So many things have evolved since my time.”
He added, “If the CEO is working with them and you’re not getting results, you need to make changes. Every team, when there’s a problem and progress isn’t being made, makes changes.”
Tagoe’s comments reflect a broader frustration over Hearts of Oak’s current trajectory.
Despite their historical successes, the club is currently fourth in the Ghana Premier League with 18 points from 11 games.
