Former Asante Kotoko and Ashanti Gold defender Atta Kusi has expressed regret over pursuing a career in football, citing the poor remuneration in Ghana’s domestic league.
The 32-year-old, who also played for Heart of Lions during the 2023/24 season, shared his frustrations in a TikTok interview. Kusi revealed that inadequate salaries and the challenges of sustaining a football career in Ghana pushed him to reconsider his choices.
“I honestly regret playing football,” Kusi admitted. “It pains me that I didn’t learn a trade or focus on education. If I had, I’d be earning a better salary than what I got from playing football in this country.”
Kusi lamented having to rely on friends for financial support, calling the experience “humiliating.” He urged young players to prioritize opportunities abroad, as building a stable career in Ghana’s league remains a struggle.
Kusi’s last stint with Heart of Lions saw him make six appearances, helping the team narrowly avoid relegation in the 2023/24 campaign.
