Former Kotoko keeper opposes calls to suspend 2024/25 GPL after fan tragedy

Ghana National U-20 Men’s Football Team goalkeeper coach Isaac Amoako, has voiced his disagreement over calls for the suspension of the 2024/25 Ghana  Premier League, arguing that such a decision would disrupt the football calendar.

Amoako, a former Asante Kotoko captain who previously served as Nsoatreman’s goalkeeper coach, insists that all individuals involved in the incident should face strict sanctions from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as it conducts its investigation.

For the supporters, there should be a ban, because these things have been occurring in our game and we see the sanctions that the disciplinary committee normally brings so the league should go on, but we should leave the investigations to the disciplinary committee and the security people to do that and look for the perpetrators.”

If we say they should stop the league, it is going to affect our calendar. I know the security people and the disciplinary committee will do their work.”

The Ghana Football Association has moved to invite Premier League clubs for an emergency meeting to be held this Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 11 am. Topics to be discussed include stadium safety, fan behaviour, and emergency response protocols.
