Ghana skipper Andre Dede Ayew, addressed the mental aspects of overcoming defeat during a recent guest lecture at the University of Ghana.
Speaking at a program led by Dr. Collins Agyemang Badu, a psychology lecturer specializing in sports psychology, Ayew spoke candidly about his own experience with setbacks, referencing Ghana’s heart-breaking loss to Ivory Coast in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
“It’s part of our sport, it’s part of the mental work,” Andre Ayew said. “You’re human sometimes you have to fall down deep, wake up and go again.”
The former West Ham forward was a key player in Ghana’s 2015 AFCON run, but the team fell short after the match finished 0-0 in both regulation and extra time. The final was ultimately decided by penalties, with Ivory Coast emerging victorious 9-8.
The memory of that defeat serves as a powerful reminder for Ayew, who holds the record for most appearances (119) and goals (24) scored for the Black Stars.
Ayew’s honesty about the emotional toll of the 2015 defeat and his emphasis on bouncing back resonates with athletes and fans alike. His message highlights the crucial role of mental strength alongside physical talent in achieving success on the pitch.
Andre Ayew is currently a free agent after his short-term contract with French Ligue 1 side Le Havre ended on June 30th. Despite this, he continues to inspire both on and off the field.
