Ghana Captain Andre Ayew has acknowledged the Black Stars’ recent struggles, emphasizing the need for continued effort to regain their former glory.
“We were on top for about 10 to 12 years but now it’s other people,” Ayew admitted. “We need to keep working harder.” This comes after Ghana’s disappointing exits in the group stages of the last 3 major tournaments: the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Despite the recent setbacks, Ayew remains optimistic. “We have the talent and the players, it’s just a matter of time and a little bit of luck for things to switch around,” he remarked. He acknowledged the frustration of fans, stating, “We cannot hide behind the fact that the results lately have not been the best and we are sorry for that.”
The Black Stars will have an opportunity to turn things around in June’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic.
Ayew, a veteran leader with over 110 caps and 24 goals for Ghana, believes the team can recapture its winning ways. “Football is like a cycle you have moments,” he stated, suggesting that Ghana’s time to shine again will come.
Fans will be looking towards Ayew’s experience and leadership to inspire the Black Stars in their upcoming qualifiers.
