The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with head coach Chris Hughton following a dismal performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The decision, announced on the GFA website, marks a swift and decisive response to the Black Stars’ group-stage exit without a single win.
“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect,” the GFA statement declared.
Recognizing the wider impact of the performance, the GFA added, “The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.”
This decisive move comes after the Black Stars’ AFCON campaign left the nation stunned and demanding accountability.
Hughton, appointed in February 2023, was tasked with guiding Ghana through the remainder of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, the tournament itself, and the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. However, his tenure was plagued by uninspiring displays and a failure to unlock the team’s attacking potential.
Looking forward, the GFA has promised to provide a roadmap for the Black Stars’ future direction in the coming days.
