Koforidua, August 30, 2023 – The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has made a substantial announcement regarding the prize money for the upcoming 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season. The victorious team of this season will be awarded more than $100,000 in total rewards.
During the official launch of the forthcoming league season in Ghana, held at the Eastern Premier Hotel in Koforidua on Tuesday, this exciting news was unveiled. The GFA has taken a significant step by increasing the previous prize money from GHC 300,000 ($26,320) to GHC 500,000 ($43,868), marking an impressive surge of 67%.
All 18 participating clubs will receive equitable distributions, including GHC 330,000 for TV rights, GHC 275,000 sponsorship from betPawa, and GHC 50,000 designated for Colts development, as promised by the FA during the 29th Ordinary Congress. This alteration will elevate the total benefits for the eventual winner of the Ghana Premier League to GHC 1,155,000 ($105,000).
Apart from the champion, the GFA has extended financial recognition to teams ranking from second to tenth place. The first runner-up will secure GHC 200,000, while the second runner-up will receive GHC 100,000. This move is designed to intensify the competition within the league, as elucidated by Kurt Okraku, the President of the GFA.
The league is scheduled to commence on Friday, September 15, with Medeama SC ready to defend their title against strong contenders such as Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, both eager to regain their former prominence. Additionally, Aduana Stars and Bechem United, who narrowly missed out in the previous season, will also be striving to make their mark.
This season’s competition is anticipated to witness an elevated level of competitiveness. The return of Heart of Lions and Bofoakwa Tano, along with the entrance of new contenders Nations FC, is expected to inject fresh excitement and energy into the league.
