Ghanaian midfielder Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu, offered a glimmer of hope with an early assist for Fleetwood Town, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a crushing 4-1 defeat against Peterborough United in the English League One on Tuesday night.
Wiredu played a key role in Fleetwood’s opening goal, setting up Bosun Lawal to fire home within the first minute of the match. However, Peterborough fought back quickly, with Malik Mothersille equalizing in the 18th minute.
The second half belonged to the home side. Archie Collins broke the deadlock in the 81st minute, putting Peterborough ahead for the first time. Jonson Clarke-Harris then grabbed a late brace, scoring in the 95th and injury time to secure a convincing victory for Peterborough.
This defeat leaves Fleetwood Town firmly in the relegation zone, occupying 23rd position with 37 points after 44 matches. They will be hoping to turn things around when they face Leyton Orient on April 20 in their next league fixture.
Despite the team’s struggles, Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu has been a bright spot for Fleetwood this season. He has contributed directly to five goals, scoring three himself and providing two assists in his 34 league appearances.
