Lionel Messi becomes first to win two FIFA World Cup golden balls

Argentina have been crowned as champions of the 2022 Qatar Fifa World Cup after beating France 4-2 on penalties after an enthralling 3-3 scoreline after 120 minutes with Lionel Messi awarded player of the tournament.

The Albiceleste skipper won his first Golden ball award in 2014 where Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany in extra time in what was an impressive tournament by Messi but a heartbreaking one after Mario Gotze’s 112th minute strike.

However, this time, the seven time Balon dor winner has his hands on football’s greatest prize as well as the golden ball yet again, making his the sole player in World Cup history with golden balls.

He remains Argentina’s top scorer in world Cup history with 13 goals and is a part of the top five scorers in World Cup history.

Messi scored seven times and assisted thrice for Argentina in seven games and nearly clinched onto the golden boot if not for French star Kylian Mbappe who was crowned as top scorer was eight goals.
