Liverpool are set to win the race to capture Fulham’s brilliant young forward Fabio Carvalho and are looking into a possible deal this month, 90min understands.
The 19-year-old England youth star has been outstanding for the Cottagers since making his debut for them in 2020, when they were still in the Premier League.
The Portugal-born forward is out of contract at the end of the season and has turned down numerous offers of a new contract at Craven Cottage.
Fulham have not given up on keeping Carvalho, but we understand they are growing increasingly worried about losing him.
A host of clubs have been tracking him, including the likes of West Ham, Leeds, Arsenal, Tottenham and Southampton.
At one point the Saints had positioned themselves well in the race and appeared to be favourites, but Liverpool’s presence looks to have swayed things.
Indeed, Southampton accepted they won’t be getting him and have since turned their attention to Chelsea winger Tino Anjorin.
Liverpool believe Carvalho is very good fit for their system and even think he could do a job for them this season. 90min understands they are ready to open talks with Fulham about a deal, though it appears unlikely the Cottagers – favourites for promotion to the Premier League this season – would sanction an exit.
However, they also know this would be their last chance to get a good deal in terms of money for Carvalho.
If Carvalho’s contract runs out, he is free to leave, but Fulham would be due compensation from the club who sign him if they can’t agree a deal. Coincidentally, Fulham and Liverpool are no strangers to such a situation.
In 2019, Liverpool grabbed another Fulham starlet in the shape of Harvey Elliott and the two clubs could not agree a deal. It went to tribunal and Liverpool were ordered to pay a fee worth less than £5m, way below Fulham’s asking price.
