Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo has received a glowing endorsement from midfield legend Claude Makelele.
When asked about players Mainoo resembles, Makelele offered a surprising comparison: “I would say Michael Essien. He needs to learn more from Michael Essien,” he remarked.
Mainoo enjoyed a breakout season at United, contributing to their FA Cup triumph. His dribbling skills, relentless work ethic, and aggressive style impressed Makelele. These very qualities were Essien’s trademarks, leading to the interesting comparison from his former teammate.
“He is young, you know, and he has a great future ahead of him. Good dribbler, running, fighting,” Makelele continued. “I won’t say he’s like me, but he can be. But I see him progressing and he can be a very good midfielder for the national team.”
While not a direct replica of Makelele himself, the French legend believes Mainoo can learn a great deal from Essien’s experience. By channeling Essien’s approach, Mainoo has the potential to become a top midfielder.
Makelele, a defensive maestro himself, boasted a decorated playing career before turning to coaching. He previously dominated the midfield for Chelsea, Real Madrid, and PSG before hanging up his boots in 2011. After retirement, he transitioned into coaching, managing French side Bastia and Belgian club Eupen.
Mainoo’s impressive performances earned him a call-up to the England national team for Euro 2024. He’s expected to play a significant role under Gareth Southgate, with England facing Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia in the group stage.
