Man Utd youngster Amad Diallo to join Birmingham on loan

Exclusive – Manchester United winger Amad Diallo will join Championship club Birmingham on loan for the rest of the season, 90min understands.

The deal will offer the 19-year-old the chance for more regular first-team football and is expected to be completed early next week.

Amad will become the third United youngster to join Birmingham this season. Tahith Chong made the switch to St Andrew’s in the summer but has been recovering from a groin injury since October, while teenage centre-back Teden Mengi sealed his loan move earlier this month.

United initially agreed a deal to sign Amad from Atalanta in October 2020, with the transfer completed last January. He had been the first player born in 2002 to score in Serie A and his long-term potential convinced United to part with £19m up front, plus anther £18.5m in future add-ons.

Amad has made nine first-team appearances for United to date. Eight of those came last season, which also yielded his first goal for the club in a Europa League tie against AC Milan.

He has had to overcome a thigh injury this season, limiting his first-team opportunities so far. The youngster made his comeback at Under-23 level in late October and went on to score twice and register an assist in a 3-2 Premier League 2 win over Leeds soon after. He later made it into the matchday squad for a first-team win over Arsenal in early December and then started in the Champions League group stage against Young Boys for his only senior outing this season.

Playing time is important for Amad at this stage of his career and the hope is that Birmingham will be able to provide that between now and the end of the season, while also boosting the quality in their squad as they look to climb up the Championship table.
