Martin Braithwaite terminates Barcelona contract

Martin Braithwaite has departed Barcelona on a free transfer and will join Catalan rivals Espanyol.

The Denmark international was controversially signed from Leganes for £15m in 2020 after being granted permission by La Liga to make an emergency signing as cover for the then-injured Ousmane Dembele.

Braithwaite managed 58 appearances for Barcelona, chipping in with ten goals and five assists, but struggled with a serious knee injury towards the end of 2021 and was then informed by manager Xavi that he had no future at the club.

Talks to terminate his contract had failed earlier this summer, leading to whistles and jeers from the Camp Nou crowd whenever Braithwaite was spotted, but a fresh round of talks has led to a positive outcome.

A Barcelona statement read: “FC Barcelona and Martin Braithwaite have reached an agreement to terminate the contact binding the player to the club until the end of the 2023/24 season.

“FC Barcelona publicly expresses its gratitude to Braithwaite for his commitment and dedication and wishes him the best of fortune and every success in the future.

Braithwaite will now take his talents across Catalonia to Espanyol.
