Newcastle are in talks to sign long-term target Rogerio from Serie A side Sassuolo, 90min understands.
The Magpies have been on the hunt for a new left-back this January, but have seen a number of targets slip away from them.
They were beaten to the signing of Lucas Digne by Aston Villa, while Atalanta and Germany star Robin Gosens is edging closer to a move to Inter.
Eddie Howe is still keen to bring in a left-sided full-back and that has led Newcastle back to Rogerio, who they were monitoring last year.
Sassuolo want roughly £15m for the Brazilian, and sources have told 90min that there is a good chance that Rogerio will end January as a Newcastle player.
Newcastle had also been looking at Genk and Mexico defender Gerardo Arteaga, but they are pushing ahead with their move for Rogerio.
The 24-year-old initially joined Sassuolo on loan from Juventus for the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons before signing on a permanent deal.
He’s made 95 appearances for the Neroverdi but is yet to be capped at senior level by Brazil, though has played ten times for them at youth level.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s deal to sign Jesse Lingard is on the ropes after talks broke down on Tuesday, but further negotiations are planned in the final days of this window.
