Newcastle in UEFA Champions League after 25 years

Newcastle United have seen a transformation under the ownership of the Saudi-backed consortium and coach Eddie Howe. The revitalized Magpies lost one game before the mid-season break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, returning afterwards to extend their unbeaten league run to 17 matches before defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City.

Newcastle needed one point from their final two matches against Leicester and Chelsea to secure UEFA Champions League in 2023/24 as one of the top four finishers in the Premier League. Newcastle are also 2023 Carabao Cup finalists and will face Manchester united.

Newcastle have not been in the Champions League proper since 2002/03, when they reached the second group stage or. They came third in that group, behind Barcelona and Inter Milan.

Newcastle looked on course to again reach the group stage of the Champions League in 2003/04. Their third-place finish in the Premier League earned them a path through qualifying, but they never made it to the group stage.
