Newcastle United are willing to make Jesse Lingard the highest paid player at the club in order to persuade him to join them on loan, 90min understands.
Newcastle, who have asked Man Utd about a number of potential loans including Lingard and Donny van de Beek, are looking to push through as many deals as they can before the end of the January window.
The Magpies have already secured deals for Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, but they want a handful more before the window closes.
A loan deal for Lingard is now being considered again, but it remains to be seen whether it can be finalised. Man Utd are open to the idea of Lingard leaving and would not stand in his was, but the player would have to give the ok to any move.
Sources close to the player believe that Newcastle will have to ‘work very hard’ to convince Lingard to make the move.
Early in January, the midfielder’s people had made it clear his preference was to wait until the summer before making any move despite interest from Newcastle, West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal.
If Newcastle can’t get Lingard to come to St. James’ Park, then Newcastle have other England international midfielders on their radar in the shape of Chelsea’s Ross Barkley and Tottenham’s Dele Alli.
Another position that Howe would like to bolster his options is left-back, and 90min understand that the club have held talks of Bayer Leverkusen’s Mitchel Bakker. The former Paris Saint Germain full-back joined Bayer in the summer, but now Newcastle have been told he is open to the prospect of moving to St. James’ Park.
We understand Newcastle have also enquired about Aston Villa’s Matt Targett – who may be available after Villa signed Luca Digne.
