Ayew also finished in third place with Ghana in 2008. Apart from team success, the former OM player achieved individual success, winning the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé award in 2015, the BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2011, and securing three CAF Team of the Year honors

Head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, has lauded veteran player Andre Ayew. Describing him as a “living legend” despite his exclusion from the latest squad.

The 34-year-old Ayew, despite his impressive form, was left out of the team that recently secured crucial victories over. Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In an interview with 3Sports, Addo praised Ayew for his significant contributions and sacrifices for Ghana. “I think it’s a normal question. He’s a player. I said it before. I mean, he’s a legend, a living legend,” Addo stated. “He has done so much for the nation. He sacrificed so much for the nation. Good guy, with good character. I mean, he represents Ghana these days like no one has.”

Addo explained that his decision to leave Ayew out of the squad was made with the best interest of the national team in mind. “But, surely, as a coach, I have to think and I have to think about the Ghana national team, what’s best for the Ghana national team,” he added.

Despite the omission, Addo reassured that Ayew’s exclusion does not mean the end of his international career. “The doors to the Black Stars are not completely shut to Andre Ayew,” he indicated, suggesting that the veteran player could still be considered for future selections.

As the Black Stars continue their journey towards the 2026 World Cup, the team and its management remain focused on making strategic decisions to enhance their performance, with Ayew’s future contributions still a possibility.
