Former Portugal Head Coach Fernando Santos has been appointed as the new Poland Head Coach after stepping down from his position following Portugal’s quarter final World Cup exit.
Santos led Portugal to their first major title in the 21st Century at the 2016 European Championships before he went on to win the 2019 UEFA Nations League.
The former Portugal boss stepped down as Portugal’s head Coach after their 1-0 defeat to Morocco and the criticism following his decision to start Cristiano Ronaldo from the bench in the knockout phase of last year’s Mondial.
He now leads the Polish bench and has expressed his desire and plan for the new job.
“From today, I am Polish. I am one of you,” Santos declared at the official ceremony in Warsaw.
“It is an honour to continue my work as a trainer here,” he added.
“I am convinced that we will work hard to give the Poles a lot of joy. I am sure that we will achieve success,” Santos told journalists at the press conference called to announce the nomination.
Fernando Santos succeeds Czeslaw Michniewicz, who was relieved of his position in December following a last-16 elimination at last year’s Mondial to France.
