Roberto Martinez has been appointed as the new Head Coach of the Portuguese men’s national team after leaving his role as Belgium Head Coach after the World Cup.
Roberto Martinez replaces Fernando Santos who also left his role after Portugal’s World Cup elimination to Morocco last year.
The former Everton manager looks to lead this golden generation of Portugal who posses incredible talent to another International trophy.
Despite a win rate of 44 percent in his career, the former Everton manager led Belgium to the last four of the 2018 world cup as they finished Bronze winners of the tournament.
Despite failing to get past the 2022 World Cup group stage with Belgium, Portugal believe Roberto Martinez is the right man to lead the 2016 European Cup winners to Euro 2024 glory.
The 49 year old now faces the question as to whether or not to fix Cristiano Ronaldo as the center of the new project for Portugal.
Asked about Ronaldo, these were Martinez’s words about the Al Nassr forward: “I want to contact all 26 players who were at the last World Cup … Cristiano is a player on that list,” he said, adding he would “sit down and talk” with the forward, who is his country’s all-time record scorer with 118 goals.
