President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo has hailed the growing diversity in the Ghana Premier League, highlighting the recent success of new teams like FC Samartex 1996.
The club’s remarkable journey to the league title in just their second top-flight season has captured the nation’s attention.
During a visit by the champions, President Akufo-Addo celebrated the emergence of Samartex and Medeama SC, who won the previous season, as a refreshing change from the dominance of traditional powerhouses Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko. Kotoko is the most successful team in the league with 25 titles, followed by Hearts of Oak with 21 titles.
“We were all very excited watching your rise and emergence this season. It’s good to see diversity in Ghana football, moving away from the old norms we grew up with. Medeama last year, you [Samartex] this year—it’s very healthy for Ghana football and a sign of vitality and revitalization that we should all strive to sustain,” President Akufo-Addo stated
Samartex’s triumph has earned them a spot in the CAF Champions League, where they will face Cameroon’s Victoria United in the preliminary round on August 16 and 23.
As the league gears up for the 2024/25 season, set to kick off on September 6, fans are eagerly anticipating another exciting campaign. President Akufo-Addo’s endorsement of the league’s new dynamics underscores a promising future for Ghanaian football.
