Staunch Sekondi Hasaacas Football Club supporter Ebenezer Kwamena Thompson has urged the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ghana Football Association, National Sports Authority and other stake holders of the game to honor one of the outstanding football administrators in Ghana, the late Mr. E. A Nartery as he writes:
“This is Mr. E.A. Nartey of Hardwood Timbers and Sekondi Hasaacas football Club fame. Even though the club had been there long ago before he was made the chairman of the club but he changed the face of the club drastically. It was under his administration that the club secured it training pitch and the club house,
He also instituted the supporters union. (The Councils) this is how the name council came about, in those days the meeting of Sekondi Chiefs was refered to as council meeting so the then secretary to the commitee formed to create the supporters group ( Mr. Kwesi Anwuboh coined that name.
Mr. Nartey’s leadership won the only league and international trophy (Wafu) he also won other trophies like SWAG CUP, F.A. CUP, GALA Etc. It was under his administration that Sekondi Hasaacas represented Ghana Black Stars in Cameroon, again his administration gave the 1982 Black Stars six regular players namely, Skipper Emmanuel Quarshie, Isaac Paha! Joe Carr, John Essien., Windsor Kofi Abbrey.
In those days there was no sponsorship and at the same time there wasn’t sale of player so every expenses were made from his personal pocket. One interesting thing about this man is his relationship with his players, in those days most of the football players were school dropouts but this man sponsored most of his players education and he also employed others in his timber firm. He also constituted a team of young men and trained them to handle the club in future and the current chairman Mr. Nanabanyin Eyeson is one of them.
He also did some renovation works at the Sekondi Gyandu Park hence the name Nartey stand. Before his administration the colors of Hasaacas was green and White and his administration added the red!, he also brought the slogam Hasmal we go do, Heavy Do. During his tenure it was difficult for clubs to woo his players, Asante Kotoko tried heaven and earth to sign Emmanuel Quarshie, Robert Kwofie and Ebo Essien etc. But the players themselves decided not to go. He sent Quarshie to Zamalek of Egypt. I am by this reminding the sports authority and football Association to remember and honour this Great SOUL, MR. E.A. NARTEY REST IN PERFECT PEACE. Amen.”
