Former Black Stars killer Stephen Appiah has narrated how he got the opportunity to captain the senior national team during a friendly against Slovenia in 2002.
The 39-year-old in an interview with GTV Sports Plus said:
“It was a friendly game against Slovenia, it was launch time and we were preparing for the game when the coach then (Milan Živadinović) named me as the captain,” the former Fenerbahçe man told GTV.
“Olele (Richard Kingston) was sitting next to me so I raised my hand and told the Coach “Olele” is here and he was the senior player in the team so I think he should be the captain.
“Whiles I was talking, Olele just tapped me on the shoulder and told me Stephen you will lead us.”
Appiah who retired in 2015 led the Black Stars from 2002 to 2010 when he called off his international duty.
