Ghanaian midfield maestro Thomas Teye Partey was magnificent on Wednesday night as his side kicked the champions league holders Liverpool out of the competition.
Atletico Madrid silenced the Anfield faithfuls as they scored three goals to drive the defending champions out of the competition.
Georgino Wijnaldum scored a header close to half time to force the tie into extra-time. Roberto Firmino added a second to put Liverpool in pole position just minutes into extra time.
However, a howler from Liverpool’s second choice goalkeeper Adrian allowed the substitute Marcos Llorente to score a crucial away goal to shift the tie in Atletico’s favour. Llorente recorded his second goal of the night just some few minutes after his first to bring the aggregate score to 3-2 in favour of Atletico.
Former Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata came off the bench to score Atletico’s third goal of the match to put the tie to bed.
Thomas Partey’s Atletico Madrid have now qualified to the quarter-final stage of the competition. There’s no doubt that the team will be boosted by this significant triumph as they look to change their fortunes in the Spanish Primera La Liga after some inconsistent displays this season.
