Tom Edwards loan return to New York Red Bulls agreed

Stoke City right-back Tom Edwards has agreed to return to the New York Red Bulls on loan for the 2022 season, 90min understands.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a successful temporary spell at Red Bull Arena in 2021, playing 28 times during the MLS regular season and notching two assists along the way to help his side qualify for the Playoffs for the 12th year in a row.

Edwards clearly left an impression in New York with Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber calling the three-time England Under-20 international a ‘machine’ back in October.

As revealed by 90min, there was interest in Edwards from a number of MLS clubs, with the Red Bulls believed to be leading the pack.

Sources now indicate that Red Bull Arena was the only realistic destination for an MLS return. The two parties have agreed on a move that will see Edwards join on loan for the 2022 season, with the transfer expected to be completed within the coming days.

Edwards will join winger Lewis Morgan and fellow full-back Dylan Nealis as the Red Bulls’ major winter signings so far, while they also made goalkeeper Carlos Coronel’s loan from sister club RB Salzburg permanent.
