Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Polo has criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for reappointing Otto Addo as Black Stars coach.
Addo, who previously steered Ghana to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, took the reins again in March 2024.
This followed the dismissal of Chris Hughton after a dismal performance at AFCON 2023, where Ghana couldn’t even escape the group stage.
Polo, who earned 54 caps and won the 1978 African Cup of Nations with Ghana, believes Addo wasn’t fully prepared for the role and was pressured into accepting it.
“Otto was not even ready. He was pressured to take up the job. Those who are ready, give it to them,” Mohammed Polo told Joy Sports.
He further questioned the GFA’s process, suggesting there were more qualified candidates available. “The guy came here and told you point blank he has a job, and you said, ‘Please, come and do the job. as if we without him, nobody can do the job. ” Polo said, implying the GFA lacked strong alternatives. Otto Addo was already working as a talent coach for German side Borussia Dortmund before his reappointment as Black Stars coach.
Despite Polo’s concerns, Addo will lead the Black Stars in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic this June.
