Will Asante Kotoko Emerge As The Long Awaited Voice Of Ghana Football?

The 2020-21 premier league season may not have started well for Asante Kotoko Sporting Club. Drawing in both home and away matches. These results may be below the euphoria the Club has enjoyed since Nana Yaw Amponsah took over as Chief Executive.

But these scores are not enough to take the shine from the Porcupine Warriors and also to dim the ‘shiny moments’ and the lamelight they are enjoying. Including the mixed reactions that the Club’s signing of Brazilian International Fabio Gama received.

Undoubtedly, Kumasi Asante Kotoko has given Ghana Football something to admire going into the season. With each besiged in ‘show offs’ and media hype. Not forgetting Legon Cities FC’s signing of ‘Baby Jet’ Asamoah Gyan.

First was the ‘star studded’ management team that was paraded and got everyone talking. Then one deal after the other Kotoko unveiled a new Era of partnerships . In the lead hours to their opener, Kotoko announced a mouth watering deal with Hisense.

Thinking all was over and conclusive for the Club into the league, then the shocker came. A strong worded statement signed by the Club’s Administration and Operations Manager, Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi circulated last week Thursday with massive media coverage. Daring and damning the GFA.

To some this should have happened the Nyantakyi days.

The truth, it is not that football and for that matter Ghana football is deprived and denied ‘voices of conscience’. The sad reality, they have been more loner and at individual levels than a corporate level resulting in them being sacrificed at the least instance.

For the first time in a long time it has taken a Club to come public with an outburst and to stand to the FA. As the move was against an imposition on all Clubs, Kotoko unarguably spoke for all. Even ones under staffed and lacking competent and professional management teams.

Indeed, the response of the FA to Kotoko’s letter is an indication of the FA needing the Club’s more than itself and that there must be someone watching and standing up to them.

But as to whether Kotoko’s voice is one that can be sustained is a matter to be decided by and with time.
