WSL team of the week

There were important wins for Manchester United, Manchester City and Leicester in the WSL in gameweek 12 of the landmark 2021/22 season.

West Ham also rescued a late draw in their London derby and all four clubs have representatives in
90min’s latest team of the week.

Take at look at who made the cut…

Anna Leat (GK) – West Ham: Stood in for usual starter Mackenzie Arnold and made a crucial save in the closing stages that prevented her team going further behind. That provided the foundation to snatch a draw.

Lucy Bronze (RB) – Man City: Completed the full 90 minutes following her recent injury comeback. Involved going forward and played a key role in her side’s killer second goal against Aston Villa.

Sophie Howard (CB) – Leicester: Lined up in a back three for the Foxes and repelled everything that Brighton had to throw at her team. Came away with a clean sheet that contributed to an important win.

Millie Turner (CB) – Man Utd: Getting back to her best after a recent injury layoff and was so dominant to completely shut Birmingham down. Strong in the air and excellent with the ball at her feet as well.

Jemma Purfield (LB) – Leicester: Covered plenty of ground up and down the flank in a wing-back role. Won the ball back when she needed to, played most of her passes in the opposition half and put in plenty of crosses.

Kate Longhurst (CM) – West Ham: It was fitting that the diehard Hammers fan should get their dramatic stoppage time equaliser against Tottenham. She showed what it meant in her celebrations.

Katie Zelem (CM) – Man Utd: Ran the show in a rout of Birmingham. She protected her defence well and her passing was the basis for United’s attacking strength. Also scored the opening goal.

Georgia Stanway (CM) – Man City: Impressed earlier this season when asked to play out of position and now continues to do so back in her favoured role. Got another two goals to her name.

Jessica Sigsworth (RW) – Leicester: Her hard work helped contribute towards a vital win, but she was also involved in much of the Foxes’ best attacking play and could have scored on another day.

Ellen White (ST) – Man City: Didn’t find the net herself but notched up two assists in the first half alone in her team’s comfortable win in the west midlands to showcase her all-around ability.

Leah Galton (LW) – Man Utd: Two goals and an assist inside the first 18 minutes against Birmingham tells its own story. Looks back to her best after putting a challenging 2021 behind her.
